The Tunnel project
”Our project contributes to the sustainable society of the future.”
The Tunnel project is responsible for delivering the infrastructure that will convey wastewater from several municipalities to the upgraded Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant. The project comprises 18 kilometres of wastewater tunnels excavated at depths of 20–35 metres, a transfer pipeline from Borgeby, and the new Sjölunda pumping station – an underground facility equivalent in size to a ten-storey building.
In regions experiencing population growth, wastewater tunnels are becoming an increasingly common solution. They provide a safe and efficient means of conveying wastewater while also offering significant storage capacity during periods of heavy rainfall. This allows wastewater to be pumped to the treatment plant at a rate that optimises treatment performance and plant capacity, making the entire system both robust and sustainable.
From thorough planning to tangible results
─ We invest considerable time in planning and preparation to ensure that everyone involved has a clear understanding of what we are building. The challenge is to strike the right balance between schedule, cost, environmental performance, quality, and health and safety. None of these aspects can be prioritised at the expense of another – they must work together as an integrated whole. Establishing strong collaboration with contractors who share our commitment to this balance is absolutely essential to the project's success, says Lars Landén.
The Tunnel project encompasses the entire project lifecycle – from early-stage feasibility studies and the evaluation of system solutions and technical options, to the development of programme and design documentation for virtually every part of the facility.
The project also includes preparatory civil works and utility diversions, as well as the procurement of highly qualified contractors who, through a trust-based partnership and close collaboration, help drive the project forward – spanning detailed design, safe and environmentally responsible construction, and ultimately the commissioning of the facilities before handover to the operating organisation.
─ It is incredibly rewarding to be part of a project of this scale and complexity. Every day brings new challenges, different project phases, and opportunities to work alongside highly skilled professionals as we help shape the transition from the old system to the new. Having a clear, shared objective is also a strong source of motivation. It creates a sense of purpose and strengthens the teamwork and commitment that underpin our daily work.
