Benefits

For our community and the environment

Why do we need to modernise and expand our wastewater treatment system, and why is VA SYD advocating a shared solution for several municipalities? We summarise the answers in four community benefits.

Since 2017, VA SYD has been working to establish a regional infrastructure investment for the municipalities of Burlöv, Lomma, Lund and Malmö. To allow local residents to understand how the infrastructure investment creates benefits and meets needs, VA SYD has formulated and decided on four benefits that will guide the work.

The four benefits

Securing growth and meeting the needs of a growing population in the region.

Protecting our aquatic environments where we want to live and work.

Recycling energy and nutrients to the community.

Creating a robust, reliable wastewater system.

Securing growth and meeting the needs of growing population in the region

Rapid population growth, urban development and climate change, with an increase in rainfall and drought, require the expansion and modernisation of wastewater treatment plants and wastewater systems. This is essential if the community is to function, grow and be attractive to residents and businesses. Regional expansion also provides many new jobs over a 10-year period.

Protecting our aquatic environments where we want to live and work

A regional solution protects smaller watercourses as it results in the closure of small local treatment plants. The wastewater is transported further with less environmental impact for treatment in a larger new treatment plant with improved treatment technology that complies with stricter environmental legislation and helps achieve the municipalities’ goals for recreational development of water assets in the urban environment.

Recycling energy and nutrients to the community

Environmental legislation, climate change and the circular economy are creating new demands. We are expanding and modernising wastewater treatment in the region with a focus on sustainability and smart technology to ensure that the right water is in the right place. Creating a robust, reliable wastewater system

By thinking big and driving a digital transformation, we are creating a robust, more reliable wastewater treatment system that can handle future disruption, crises and climate change throughout our region for a long time to come. The impact on the community, business and residents should be minimised. It should just work.
