MAXIMA

A new wastewater treatment system for future generations

MAXIMA is a regional wastewater treatment system developed to meet the challenges of a growing population, stricter treatment requirements, and climate change. The system consists of several parts:

  • Rebuilt Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant with new outfall pipelines in the Öresund
  • Newly constructed large Sjölunda pumping station
  • New wastewater tunnels beneath Malmö and from Lund
  • Newly constructed pressurised transfer pipe from Borgeby

Through this infrastructure investment, VA SYD is creating the conditions for people to live and work in southwestern Skåne well into the future.

Since 2017, VA SYD has been working on the development of a regional wastewater infrastructure for the municipalities of Burlöv, Lomma, Lund, and Malmö. To clarify how the initiative creates value and addresses future needs, VA SYD has formulated and adopted four key benefits to guide the work.
