The Tunnel project

"Our project will provide increased knowledge for the entire industry."

Project Tunnel's main task is to drive the process of replacing an older pressure sewer system with a wastewater tunnel under central Malmö and building a wastewater tunnel from Källby in Lund. Both will lead to the Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant, where a new pumping station will also be built. In addition, transmission lines from Borgeby will connect to the tunnel system.

The purpose of building wastewater tunnels instead of lines is to be able to optimise the functionality of the wastewater treatment plant for safer and more efficient operation, which minimises the risk of disturbances and secures the system for future population growth. Not having to lay lines also provides better conditions for developing urban areas and preserving valuable arable land.

Focus on both short and long term

─ The project is an important contribution to community planning. It is a big investment and thus a big responsibility. Because even though we involve international experience and work with proven technology solutions, deep tunnel facilities are new to us at VA SYD. There is a lot happening all the time and it is important to keep the focus on both short-term and long-term aspects, says Stefan Milotti.

Project Tunnel's work includes everything from preliminary studies, evaluation of various alternatives for system solutions and technology choices, planning for contractor procurement, including planning, drawing up construction documents, directing and leading the contractors, to commissioning MAXIMA and handing it over to the receiving organisation.

─ I like that there are many challenges and a clear goal. The work is very instructive and will provide increased knowledge for the entire industry. In addition, it feels good to be part of building a better society and make a contribution to south-west Scania.
