The New Sjölunda project

"A large and complex construction project providing opportunities to develop unique expertise."

The New Sjölunda project's mission is to replace a 60-year-old wastewater treatment plant with a new, robust facility, featuring higher capacity and modern technology, as well as new outlet pipes into the Öresund. The expanded and rebuilt Sjölunda will become one of Sweden's largest wastewater treatment plants, and the hub of the region's new wastewater treatment system MAXIMA.

The new treatment plant, with a new purification process, will be built on the same site as the current facility—while it remains fully operational. To succeed, the work must be carried out in stages, which is expected to take around eight years.

The biggest challenge is that the treatment plant must continuously produce treated wastewater in compliance with legal requirements, even as we gradually replace old parts of the facility with new ones, says Kristina Olofsson.

Excellent opportunities for skills development

The construction project will begin on vacant, accessible areas by building a new facility segment, which will then be commissioned using temporary rerouting. This will make it possible to demolish the corresponding part of the old plant to make room for the next construction phase—continuing in the same step-by-step manner across all sections.

— This approach will place high demands on everyone involved in the project, but at the same time it offers optimal conditions for learning within the organization, with significant opportunities to develop unique expertise.

Investing in sustainable community development

The New Sjölunda Project is a key part of VA SYD’s investment to meet the needs of a growing population, comply with increasingly strict treatment requirements, and protect the region’s aquatic environments so that more people can live, work, and thrive here.

There are not many projects like this in the country, and it is incredibly exciting to take on this complex task together with skilled colleagues and experienced contractors and in doing so, help shape the sustainable society of the future.
