New outfall pipelines contribute to a cleaner aquatic environment in the Öresund
The new wastewater system MAXIMA consists of several interconnected components, of which one is the new outfall pipelines further out in the Öresund. The combination of new technology for wastewater treatment and the new outfall pipelines, will substantially reduce the impact on the aquatic environment in Lommabukten and Natura 2000 sites.
Scope
Number: 2 pipelines
Length: 4 kilometres
Internal diameter: 1,8 metres
The new outfall pipelines from Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant is about 4 kilometres long (the current length is 2 kilometres), and will be placed on the seabed. The outfall pipelines will be laid in a dredged channel, from Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant and 2 kilometres out in the Öresund. For the outer 2 kilometres, the pipelines will be placed on the seabed, and secured with piles.
Discharging cleaner water further out in the Öresund
With new and improved technologies for wastewater treatment and new outfall pipelines leading the treated wastewater further out into a more flowing water, the impact on the aquatic environment will be substantially reduced.
Furthermore, MAXIMA enables the decommissioning of local plants located next to small watercourses. Altogether, this improves the water quality in Lommabukten and further protects Natura 2000 sites. In addition, a reduced eutrophification in Lommabukten benefits the existence of eelgrass, which is a species with important ecological functions.
