Timeline for the building of MAXIMA
Planning and building a new regional wastewater treatment system takes time. A decisive milestone was reached in the summer of 2024, when an implementation decision came into place after an investment agreement was approved by the participating municipalities.
An important milestone for starting the construction of MAXIMA is obtaining an environmental permit as well as permission to install new outfall pipelines. An application for an environmental permit was submitted in May 2025, and we expect to receive both permits in spring 2027. Read more about the permit process here
After a contractor has been appointed for the major reconstruction of the Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant, work on a couple of subprojects can begin under VA SYD’s existing permit. This includes a facility that is necessary for VA SYD to meet current discharge requirements until the new wastewater treatment plant is completed, and new power supply needed to carry out this work. Once the necessary permits are in place, contruction work can begin.
In 2026, the procurement of contractors for the construction of tunnels and shafts will also begin, allowing work to start as planned in 2028.
Planning work began in 2017
Planning for the new, joint wastewater treatment system MAXIMA started as early as 2017, when VA SYD began coordinating local expansion plans into a comprehensive solution. The new and robust wastewater treatment system will provide the municipalities of Burlöv, Lomma, Lund, and Malmö with the overall best socio-economic solution.
